Texting While Driving Killed Two in Missouri

More than a year later, the National Transportation Safety Board has determined that a horrible car accident in Missouri was caused by a 19-year old driver texting on his cell phone.  Joan Lowys Associated Press article, Driver was texting in Missouri traffic pileup, says that the 19-year old was driving a pickup truck while texting on his phone and rear ended a tractor truck.  Because of that collision, one school bus rear ended the pickup truck and was consequently rear ended by another school bus.  The pickup truck driver and a 15-year old in one of the school buses were both killed.

Many states have banned texting or talking on the phone while driving; Pennsylvania was recently the 35th state to put a ban on texting while driving.  The NTSB has recommended bans for commercial drivers, but hasnt recommended the ban for passenger cars yet.  Missouri auto insurance companies are well aware of all of the additional accidents caused by the use of cell phones for talking, texting, and surfing the internet.  One out of 100 drivers on the road in America are on their phones at any given time of the day.  An accident caused by using your cell phone while driving will likely increase your auto insurance premiums, but more importantly, no one wants to cause a death like those in Missouri for something as ridiculous as texting while driving.

Motorway Lessons to be Introduced

It has been announced that learner drivers, as of next year, will be taken on motorways as part of their tuition. This is a very positive step as it will mean that young drivers are comfortable on the motorway at speeds of 70mph right from the off.

This change will not however become compulsory, merely just advisory. This is due to the fact that learner drivers in remote areas of the country would face some difficulty in finding a motorway within a reasonable distance of where they live.

Life Behind the Wheel

Mr Penning made the announcement when addressing the Institute of Advanced Motorists and he cited an example of his own daughter who would have been able to drive on a motorway within minutes of passing.

Mr Penning has also been quoted saying: “Are we teaching young drivers to pass a test or are we giving them the skills to enjoy life on the road?” This comment, along with the changes, have come after growing concerns regarding the current testing regime, which many believe, does not prepare drivers correctly for life behind the wheel.

Andrew Howard, the AA’s head of road safety, has also commented on the issue, saying: “This is good news. It will

With an almost biblical onslaught of twisters, floods, snow, drought, heat and wildfire, the U.S. in 2011 has seen more weather catastrophes that caused at least 1 billion in damage than it did in all of the 1980s, even after the dollar figures from back then are adjusted for inflation.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration added two disasters to the list Wednesday, bringing the total to 12. The two are the Texas, New Mexico and Arizona wildfires and the mid-June tornadoes and severe weather.

NOAA uses 1 billion as a benchmark for the worst weather disasters.

Extreme weather in America this year has killed more than 1,000 people, according to National Weather Service Director Jack Hayes. Th Read more…
